Each year we send millions of tonnes of municipal waste to landfill. In 2000/01 it was estimated that 23 million tonnes was landfilled with only 12% being recycled and 8% incinerated with energy recovery. This figure is growing by 3-4% every year!

Due to increasing legislation emanating from Brussels and from London, along with Assembly directives, compliance is becoming ever more necessary and shortfalls will be punished. Landfill taxes have been increasing steadily but in the recent budget, the Chancellor has set the new Landfill Tax Escalators. From April 2008, landfill costs jump to £32 per ton rising to £48 per ton by April 2010.
